Environment
Environmental protection is the foundation of our work. Whenever a pilot steps on a vessel, they’re making decisions that will protect the Sound’s fragile ecosystems, the coastal communities that rely on them, and the generations that will inherit them.
Stopping harm before it happens.
Our work prevents accidents, which can spill pollutants, damage shorelines and harm marine life. Every decision we make is done with the Sound’s wellbeing in mind.
Before a vessel sets sail, our pilots confirm that its propulsion, steering and navigation systems are fully operational and meet safety standards. Pilots question the captain, assess the vessel’s condition and evaluate environmental risk factors such as tides, weather and currents.
Because Puget Sound Pilots are independent professionals licensed by the State of Washington, their duty is to the people and the environment, not private interests. We are guided by safety, integrity and public trust.

Piloting Environmental Excellence
Puget Sound Pilots has been a Green Marine certified participant since 2018, reflecting a sustained commitment to environmental performance across our operations in Puget Sound and the Salish Sea. The Green Marine environmental certification program is a rigorous, voluntary initiative that drives continuous improvement across the maritime industry. Through this program we measure, benchmark and improve performance in key areas, including greenhouse gas emissions, air quality and underwater noise.
Taking action when it matters most.
Pilots act quickly when environmental conditions are at risk. We have prevented countless incidents involving fuel leaks, equipment failures and unsafe conditions. Our expertise saves lives and protects the Sound.

Balancing protection and progress.
Every safe voyage is a testament to the balance between economic progress and environmental safety. It’s not just our ecosystem that’s protected, but the ports, industries and livelihoods of the Puget Sound.

Carefully navigating the Salish Sea.
We share a deep respect for the Tribes whose ancestral waters we navigate. Every voyage we complete contributes to preserving these waters and protecting the region’s natural balance.
